Chapter Seven

Lorelei awoke the next morning with a purring cat laying on her chest. Latte was staring into her face, and the moment their eyes met, the cat jumped up and off the bed. Lorelei sat up, watching as the cat pawed at the door, meowing.

“Oh, it’s breakfast time, is it?”

Latte meowed again. With a sigh of faked annoyance, Lorelei slung her legs out of bed and got up with exaggerated slowness. The cat dashed over to rub against her ankles, then hurried back to the door.

The wooden steps creaked as Lorelei walked down them, still blinking the sleep out of her eyes. Latte kept darting forward, then coming back, as if she was worried her owner would get lost on the way to the kitchen. She knew exactly where her food was kept, and jumped up onto the counter under the cupboard, standing on her hind legs to rub her chin on the wood.

“Off, you savage,” Lorelei said, making shooing motions. “Remember when we had that talk about boundaries? No cat feet on the counter.”

She knew the cat only did that because it annoyed her. As soon as she started talking, Latte jumped back down and waited politely by the small side table where her dishes were. Lorelei selected a can — chicken today. The cat loved salmon but needed some variety. She opened it, neatly scooping the contents into Latte’s food bowl.

The cat taken care of, she went through her own morning routine. Wednesdays she had the afternoon shift at the coffee shop — she had designed the schedule that way specifically so she could take full advantage of her Tuesdays off — but she had plans this morning. The night before had been so filled with ups and downs that as soon as she escorted Mr. Bath home and double checked that Latte really wasn’t interested in being his shadow anymore, it was all she could do to get back to her own house, make hot chocolate, and plant herself in the bath until she could fall asleep. Sometimes she just needed to not think, or rather, not worry. It always led to just doing the worrying later, of course, but she always dealt with that when the time came.

This morning she was going to give Mr. Bath a serious talking-to. Someone was trying to murder him. That sort of thing didn’t just happen out of the blue. Whoever that shape in the shadows was, they wanted him, specifically, dead. She could count the small blessings, though; whoever it was didn’t seem confident enough to attack him when he wasn’t alone, and they also had a knife instead of a gun. If the attacker was braver or better armed, she might have ended up a victim alongside him.

Once Latte had finished her meal, and Lorelei had downed enough food and coffee to boost her energy to appropriate levels, she got the cat in her carrier and loaded her in the car, strapping the wire cage in with a seatbelt.
